First Day of School

“Wake up, sleepyhead!” says Teddy’s mom.

Teddy rubs his eyes.

“Good morning, Mom.”

In the bathroom, Teddy brushes his teeth.

UP-down, up-down.

Next, Teddy washes his hands and face.

Splash! Splash!

Then he combs his hair.

“I hope I look OK for school.” he says.

After breakfast, Teddy wipes the milk from his mouth and nose.

He puts on his bookbag.

“Mom, Dad – I’m ready to go!”

“Hmm, do you really want to wear those to school?” asks Teddy’s dad.

“Oh, no! My pajamas!” says Teddy.

Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

I think that everyone can divide all advertising products and services into useless ones and useful ones. It is like looking through an information desk when you pay attention to those messages that interest you. Take me for example.

I do not like jewelry. It does not mean I do not have it at all, I have a couple of inexpensive rings as gifts from my parents. I just think, people pay too much attention to this stuff. I believe it is the result of mass advertising. Every day when I am watching TV, listening to the radio or reading the paper I notice many ads about getting an expensive ring, chain, necklace or ear-rings. From my point of view these kinds of advertising contaminate people's minds. In this case you are encouraged to buy things you do not really need. They make you believe you need such products in order to succeed or be happy.

From the other side, I think that advertisements of the new detergents with up-to-date formulas to help you maintain your cloth in perfect conditions, the new cars with some extra futures that make your traveling more comfortable and sports goods that make your life healthier may help you to improve your life.

Recently my husband and I saw an ad on the Internet about a very interesting and inexpensive vocation to Japan for a week. Is not it awesome? We like traveling. So now we are planning to find out more about it and, may be, make reservations. I belief that without advertisements we would be unaware about plenty of oppotunities that may make your life happier, easier and less stressful.

My point is that every person has his own scale of values. So if he is vegetarian he will consider an ad about meat products useless for him.

[Answer]the ranking that NASA scientists gave the 15 items

Here is the ranking that NASA scientists gave the 15 items. See if you selected the same items as the top 5 - or most important - and identified the 5 least important. Even if your ranking numbers are not the exact same ones, your knowledge of the Moon and conditions there should have helped you decide which items fell to the very top and bottom of the list.

Items below are listed in order from Number 1 ( most importnat) to Number 15 (least important).

1 - Two 100-pound tanks of oxygen. Oxygen to breathe would be the most perssing need for survival.

2 - 5 gallons of weater. Water is essential to all life.

3 - Stellar map(of moon's surface). This would be your primary means of navigation.

4 - Food concentrate. A good source of food and efficient way to carry food is in concentrated form.

5 - Solar-powered FM receiver-transmitter. FM needs short range and line of sight. Needed to talk to mother ship.

6 - 50 feet of nylon rope. This will be useful in scaling the cliffs you may cross and if their are injured it would bu helpful for tying them to others or objects for tarnsport.

7 - First aid kit containing injection needle. Used for injecting vitamins through special aperture in space suit.

8 - Parachute silk. Provides protection from sun's rays.

9 - Life laft. CO2 bottle in raft may be used for propulsion.

10 - Signal flares. Distress signal can be used when mother ship is sighted.

11 - Two 45 calibre pistols. Possible means of propulsion.

12 - One case dehydrated milk. duplication of fook concentrate but much bulkier to carry.

13 - Portable heating unit. Useless on dark side, not needed on lighted side.

14 - Magnetic compass. Magnetic field on moon is not polarized, compass worthless.

15 - Box of matches. No oxygen on Moon to sustain the flame, matches won't work

Survival on the Moon

The year is 2040. You are a member of a space crew that was to rendezvous with the mother ship on the lighted surface of the moon. You experienced mechanical difficulties and your ship was forced to land about 200 miles from the point you were to be. During re-entry and landing, much of the equipment on your ship was damaged. Your survival depends on you reaching the mother ship. You will need to survey what is left that is useable and determine the most critical undamaged items that you will take for the 200 mile trip.

Your task is to look over the list below which contains the useable, undamaged items left on your ship, and rank them in order of their importance for your crew. Remember you need to rank each item in terms of its value in allowing you to reach the mother ship. Copy the list below or print out a copy. Place the number 1 by the most important item and keep going to number 15 which will be te least important. Be ready to explain why you have given each item the rank it received. Use your knowledge of the Moon and its environment to help you make your decisions. When you are done you can check how you did against the rankings given this same list by NASA. If you are doing this activity in your classroom, compare your rankings with other groups or idividuals and hear their reasons for their rankings before checking the NASA list.

How close did you come? Were your top 5 most important and bottom 5 least important items(regardless of ranking numbers) the same ones as others in your class? Or the same as on the NASA list? (See link below)

-------------------

Dear Peter,

I am very glad to receive your letter, I know that you are soon entering the university. Here, I would like to give some advice to help you choose your source or major.

I do know that you have been keen about history since childhood. However, as to what you should choose to specialize in, I would advise you to take up computer science. There are several reasons to support my viewpoint.

Firstly, a university is a place where you are trained for your future career. In modern society, which is full of challenges and opportunities, one can hardly survive without a good knowledge of advanced science and technology. Secondly, in is a fact that those who major in computer science are more likely to obtain a better paying job than history majors. Thirdly, with the amazing development of computer science, the computer plays an increasingly significant role in our daily lives. Computer literacy is a must for every modern man. I am sure that you can enjoy and choose from more job prospects in the future if you choose computer science.

I hope the above can be of some help to you in making your decision. I wish you will make a wise and happy choice. If you still have something that you wish to clarify, please do not hesitate to write me.

Best wishes,

Janet Kim
